Gary Lucas came together with Dean Bowman in the summer of 2008 at a concert at the Issue Project Room in Brooklyn over a mutual love of spiritual roots music. Both jazz/blues vocalist DEAN BOWMAN and guitarist extraordinaire GARY LUCAS are steeped in deep roots music both sacred and secular since their earliest musical beginnings. World-class musicians, between them they have played on hundreds of albums both as leaders and special guests, and have toured all over the globe in their search for musical excellence and truth. They recognize that the common denominator in country blues, sanctified Christian gospel music, Jewish liturgical music, Islamic quawwali music, and their own original songs, is the passionate element of human struggle, which informs all their work.

That — and a desire to elevate the proceedings around them — lifts the bandstand. CHASE THE DEVIL explodes into ecstasy by reinvigorating the music and poetry of transcendental roots artists like the Rev. Gary Davis, William Blake, Blind Willie Johnson, the Sabri Brothers, Joseph Spence, the Staple Singers, Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan, Shlomo Carlebach, and many others. They also are committed to writing their own original spirituals, several of which grace this their debut album. The duo perform frequently to overflow crowds who are always on their feet dancing by the end of their show. They look forward to bringing their intense and emotional music to the multitudes world-wide. The aim is to lift and inspire…to transmit joy…and to teach, not preach. As Sun Records’ Sam Phillips said about the blues: “This is where the soul of Man never dies.”
